Kabankalan Mayor Isidro Zayco yesterday said the death of two persons and nine others becoming ill in Sitio Pagula-on, Barangay Carol-an, Kabankalan City, may have been caused by food poisoning, and not by contaminated water.
That is because only two families were affected, while the rest of the residents of the sitio who get their water from the same source were not affected, Carol-an Barangay Captain Felicimo Montesino informed Zayco.
Carlito Martinez, 51, and Bambi Martinez, 40, of Sitio Pagula-on died on Monday, Zayco said.
Zayco said that, since the sitio is very far, the two who suffered from diarrhea may have died from dehydration.
Their companions who were hospitalized were also suffering from various stages of dehydration, but as of yesterday had already been discharged from the hospital, he said.
Zayco said he had sent Dr. Isagani Ayala, Kabankalan Rural Health Unit chief, to Sitio Pagula-on to investigate the cause of their deaths.
Ayala has also been asked to look into the water source in the area.
It was earlier suspected that the two deaths had been caused by contaminated water because the area above the sitio’s water reservoir is grazing land for cattle.*CPG
