‘Killings drop by
65% in Neg. Occ.’

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The number of fatalities in shooting, stabbing, hacking and parricide cases in Negros Occidental last year dropped by 65 percent, compared to 2010, police records show.

Records of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office indicated that the fatalities have dropped significantly from 202 in year 2010, to 70 last year. At the same time, the number of injured victims also reduced from 289 to 78 in the same period.

Of the 70 fatalities last year, 35 died in stabbing incidents, 22 in shooting, and 11 in hacking incidents that included a case of parricide.

Senior Inspector Gary Alan Resuma, NOPPO Operations and Plans Branch chief, attributed the dramatic decline in fatalities and injured victims in crime against persons to maximized police visibility operations and their immersion programs in the barangays.

The organization of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams in 601 barangays in Negros Occidental, Western Visayas, an approach that empowers the community to take an active role in the maintenance of peace and order, is now in full swing.

Chief  Supt. Cipriano Querol, regional police director of Western Visayas, said he sees a better peace and order situation in Western Visayas in 2012,  by pursuing stronger partnership with the community and stakeholders, through the creation of BPATs.

Querol said in a statement that 66.82 percent of 4,051 barangays in Region 6  have organized BPATs.

The number of fatalities in traffic accidents also dropped from 123 in 2010 to 63 last year, posting a reduction of 48 percent.

A total of 881 were injured in traffic accidents in 2010, compared to 263 last year, NOPPO records also showed.

Human error was blamed for most of the accidents.*GPB
