Preparations start
for 2012 WVRAA

About 3,000 delegates from the six provinces in the region are expected to converge in Bacolod City on March 12 to 16 for the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet.

As host of this year’s WRAA, the Negros Occidental Provincial Sports Office and the Department of Education are pooling their efforts to ensure that venues for the games and billeting areas for the delegates are ready for the biggest school-based sporting event in the region.

During the opening of the 2011 Provincial Meet at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in December, Negros Occidental Schools Division Superintendent Rizalino Tortosa said most of the games will be played at the Stadium.

He added that the visiting delegates from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo will be treated to a grand spectacle during the WVRAA opening.

The regional competition among the top athletes in elementary and secondary schools representing the six provinces, will be the springboard for the representatives of Western Visayas slated in summer in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

The athletes and cultural contestants will vie for the gold, silver and bronze medals in the musical-cultural competition and the 15 sports disciplines in elementary and 14 in the secondary level.

Host Negros Occidental will be defending the 12 gold medals it won in the secondary and 13 championships in the elementary level in last year’s WVRAA.

In secondary division, Negros Occidental won the championship in boys' and girls' badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, girls' chess, softball, boys' and girls' swimming, girls' table tennis, girls' tennis, and girls' volleyball.

In elementary level, the Negrenses topped the girls' athletics, boys' and girls' badminton, baseball, boxing, softball, boys' and girls' swimming, girls' taekwondo, girls' table tennis, boys' and girls' tennis and girls' volleyball.*NAB
