Create 25 more tourist
police units: Napolcom

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The National Police Commission has ordered the creation of 25 more Tourist Police Units in the country, including Negros Oriental, to ensure the safety of local and foreign tourists.

This is line with the launching yesterday of new campaign slogan of the Department of Tourism, “ It’s More Fun in the Philippines”.

Negros Oriental and 24 other provinces are included in the new list of areas in the country where Tourist Police Units will be created, Napolcom records showed.

The well-known Apo island diving site in Dauin, dolphin-whale-watching activities in Bais City, and the Balinsasayaw Twin Lakes in Sibulan, are among the prime tourist destinations in Negros Oriental, DOT records also showed.

Aside from the tourist police units created is in line with the Republic Act No. 9593, or the Tourism Act of 2009, Tourist Assistance Centers will also be set up near international and domestic airports, major seaports and tourist destination, Napolcom said.

The TACs will provide services such as call centers, information, fielding lost and found inquiries and complaints, paging systems, and agency coordination.

The creation of additional 25 tourist police units brought to 39 the number of TPUs organized since 2010 by the Philippine National Police.

TPU will be headed by a police officer with the rank of Chief Inspector, whose primary task is to “enforce laws and ordinances relative to the protection of lives, properties and environment in his area of responsibility; exercise the general power to arrest, detain, search and seize in accordance with existing laws; conduct regular patrol to ensure the safety and protection of both tourists and residents within his jurisdiction; coordinate with concerned police stations in monitoring and investigating all cases involving tourists; and take immediate appropriate action to resolve conflicts.”* GPB
