David keys Powerade win
over Rain or Shine in PBA

Gary David remained the force behind Powerade’s thrilling ride to the final four as he lifted his team, once again, over Rain or Shine with a 104-99 overtime victory in best-of-seven semifinals of the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum last night.

Delivering his fifth consecutive 30-point output in the tournament, finishing with 31 points last night, the prolific Powerade shooter made good of his promise to his family that his team will secure a back-to-back victory in the series after falling behind in Game 1.

David simply sizzled inside the court as he transformed himself into a virtual scoring machine, hitting 20 points in the final quarter and in the extra period.

Powerade shoots for a commanding 3-1 advantage in the series when they meet Rain or Shine tomorrow.

“Gary is our main man and we’ll stick with him no matter what. He delivered at crunch time and our defense held up,” said Powerade coach Bo Perasol told reporters covering the PBA.

Acknowledging the tough game played by Powerade, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said they missed out a lot in the three-point area.

“It’s a nice game, a well-played game, except that we missed too many three-point shots especially when they played the zone. We needed those shots,” Guiao said after the game.

Falling behind, 89-95, going into the fourth quarter, David bailed the Tigers out of trouble as he converted three free throws in the last 10 seconds of regular time for a 97-all deadlock to force the extension.

Meanwhile, Petron Blaze evened their own best-of-seven semis against Talk n Text at 1-1, with a 91-89, win Saturday night.

Alex Cabagnot led Petron 24 points while Jimmy Alapag, who hit a buzzer-beater trey topscored for TNT with 17 points.

Both teams will try to secure a morale-boosed second win tonight when the play for Game 3 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.*NAB
