Former Ilog Mayor Benigno Gequillana, who took his oath yesterday as councilor of Ilog town in Negros Occidental, pledged to work for the welfare of the people of his town and act as a watchdog against corruption.
Gequillana replaces his nephew, slain councilor Antonio “Karem” Gequillana, at the Sangguniang Bayan of Ilog.
Gequillana took his oath before Regional Trial Court Judge Franklin Demonteverde at the Bacolod Hall of Justice, in the presence of Karem’s widow, Carla Cuenca Gequillana, and mother Jasmin Gequillana.
Also present at his oathtaking were his son Alex, sisters Aurora Gequillana and Purification Nifras, and her husband Judge Moises Nifras.
The recommendation for the appointment of Gequillana as councilor of Ilog in place of his nephew was made by former governor Rafael Coscolluela, head of the Aton Tandum Utod Negrosanon Party.
Gequillana, who was mayor of Ilog from 1988 to 1998, and his nephew are ATON members.
In a letter to Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Gequillana thanked him for his prompt and speedy action on his appointment.
“Your highest act of statesmanship and gentlemanhood will inspire me to serve the people of Ilog, and honor the memory of the late Antonio Gequillana Jr.,” he said.*CPG
