Cebu officials turn
over assistance

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Monday presented checks totaling P3 -million to Dumaguete, Tanjay, Valencia and Sibulan in Negros Oriental for victims of tropical storm “Sendong.”

Aside from Garcia, some mayors from Cebu as well as Cebu province also turned over financial assistance, for a total of 1,500 sacks of rice to the same areas.

Tanjay and Dumaguete received P1- million each while Valencia and Sibulan got P500,000 each from the provincial government.

Cash assistance from other LGUs in Cebu include P100,000 from Alegria and P25,000 from Dumanhug for Tanjay City; P25,000 from Alegria, P50,000 from Dumanhug and P15,000 from Samboan for Valencia; P50,000 from Dumanhug, P15,000 from Samboan and P5,000 from Sarmiento Construction for Sibulan; and, P200,000 from Dumanhug, and P50,000 each from Bantayan and Badjan Dumaguete.

Gov. Garcia said they only learned recently that Valencia and Sibulan were also affected by tropical storm Sendong when the vice mayor of Santander told her about it.

She  said the province of Cebu had initially released 500 sacks of rice each for Dumaguete and Tanjay while 250 sacks of rice for Valencia and Sibulan willbe delivered soon.

The governor, Garcia,  who was with her staff and some mayors from her Cebu, also distributed relief goods to “Sendong” victims in Barangay Poblacion 8 in Dumaguete.

She said it is better to give financial assistance to the affected LGUs as they know better their priorities in relief and rehabilitation.*JFP
