68 films to be shown
at Cinema Rehiyon

Sixty-eight films will be featured in the fourth Cinema Rehiyon, a non-competition film festival of the National Commission for Culture and Arts at Robinsons Movie World-Bacolod on February.

At a press conference yesterday at Robinsons Place-Bacolod, Dr. Mike Rapatan, head of the National Committee on Cinema, said Cinema Rehiyon is a traveling event that was launched in Davao last year.

He said the program aims to develop and continue to provide venues for artistic and cultural expressions through film and reach out to the youth for them to recognize, understand, and take pride in the heritage of culture and arts.

This is also a challenge for film makers in the region to express their culture and beliefs in the contemporary way, he added.

There are 21 films from Luzon, 29 from Visayas, and 18 Mindanao. From the 29 films from Visayas, 12 are from Bacolod with 10 short films, one feature length documentary, and one feature film, Rapatan said.

They will also feature four films that are products of the NCCA film grants, he added.

Cinema Rehiyon also has Cine de Barrio where short films will be screened in barangays Villamonte, Felisa, Tangub, Alijis, Punta Taytay, and Brgy. 19, starting Jan. 21 to Feb.10.

There will be video arts installations and presentation of silent film titled “Brides of Sulu.” He also said that all films will be shown at Robinsons Movie World for four days for free.

Meanwhile, Negrense renowned director Peque Gallaga said films like this are faced with different challenges because of self expression.

When there is self expression, he said, there is always censorship.*LTG
