Fun

Benjamin Calderon

As a noun, the subject word means enjoyment, amusement, or lighthearted pleasure. Used as an adjective, fun means amusing, entertaining or enjoyable.  Now the word is focused as the catch word in our national tourism effort which is, in my opinion, very positive accompanied by great opportunities in the competition to have more domestic and foreign tourist visit the Philippines.

A smile was produced upon reading the slogan, “More fun in the Philippines” as some associate the word as an acronym for a music school formally called Faith Unlimited here in Dumaguete City.  Well it still fits when we say “more faith unlimited in the Philippines”. The new phrase used as our tourism slogan has received its share of negative comments and observations as we do have a segment of our society that chooses that perspective.  These critical minds help us to become objective, open to new lessons and in a way encourage us to be more positive.

The unfolding year holds a lot of promised fun for everybody.  It has become entertaining to watch, but not hear so well, what the Supreme Court’s spokesperson declare as the Court’s position on the embattled chief justice.  Not only will we have entertainment, amusement and play of emotions in the coming week as the Senate serves a court where legal arguments, documentary evidence is presented alongside revelations of character and inclinations.

A friend and I have a list of the senators and we have made our choices on how they will vote.  This is a tool to learn when comparing our forecast to the actual results. Also it guides us to focus our attention on the undecided and attempt to decipher and gather data that will help us decide on where to classify the senator.   We have six for acquittal, 10 for conviction and 7 still undecided.  I am sure the President has such a list and a forecast.  The defense has already alleged that the President is campaigning for a conviction of the chief justice using government resources. Well this is understandable considering that the previous administration clearly used public resources to sway the direction of the impeachment cases filed against the President.   Well, as they used to say, this is a numbers game and now they are in the receiving end.  Is that fun? For them no, while for others, yes.

Let us end with an attempt to smile as we have some fun with the following anecdote.  A priest offered a Nun a lift... She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg..... The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.   The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.' Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129.  It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.' Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.*
