Negros Occidental competing
for DA ‘Rice Achiever’s’ award

Negros Occidental is one of the 16 provinces evaluated by the Department of Agriculture national office for the top 10 provinces in the Agri-Pinoy Rice Achiever’s Award along with Larry Nacionales, DA-VI director said yesterday.

Nacionales said Negros Occidental and Iloilo are the representatives of Western Visayas for the Award.

Moises Padilla town also qualified for the top 50 municipalities and cities in the same award, along with three agricultural extension workers from Kabankalan City, San Carlos City, and Moises Padilla, he said.

Indigenous weavers
get over P.5M in aid

The Department of Science and Technology turned over P567,193.78 grant-in-aid to the weavers of Brgy. Carol-an, Kabankalan City, yesterday for the purchase of a handicraft dyer, Glady Tomulto, science research specialist, said.

Tomulto said the Carol-an weavers are indigenous people who learned their skills from their ancestors and are involved in the production of various handicrafts.

The group is also a major supplier of handicraft products for export using different raw vine materials from Carol-an, she said.

PhilHealth has
‘cash reserves’

Sen. Ralph Recto yesterday said in a press release that there’s no need to impose a 160-percent increase in the members’ contributions to Philippine Health Insurance Corp., considering its enormous cash “reserves” and huge subsidies from government.

“PhilHealth could achieve viability and attain efficacy in its delivery of services without having to impose another burden to its members, which is essentially another form of payroll tax,” Recto said.

Like deductions for withholding tax, SSS/GSIS, and Pag-IBIG, PhilHealth contributions are also automatically deducted from the payroll of workers.
