Indigenous weavers
get over P.5M in aid

The Department of Science and Technology turned over P567,193.78 grant-in-aid to the weavers of Brgy. Carol-an, Kabankalan City, yesterday for the purchase of a handicraft dyer, Glady Tomulto, science research specialist, said.

Tomulto said the Carol-an weavers are indigenous people who learned their skills from their ancestors and are involved in the production of various handicrafts.

The group is also a major supplier of handicraft products for export using different raw vine materials from Carol-an, she said.

They used to subcontract to an exporter based in Cebu City, Tomulto also said.

She said the project also involves the creation of a common service facility equipped with handicraft dryer, dyeing equipment, and handicraft hand tools.

DOST had also trained them how to dye indigenous fibers and taught them different styles of weaving through the Philippine Textile Research Institute, she said.

Based on the inventory of raw materials for weaving, there are 4.75 hectares of nito, panadan, buri, and rattan plantations in Brgy. Carol-an, that they can use to produce more products, Tomulto said.

She added that the grant will also help the families of the weavers to have sustainable income and improve the quality of their products that supply other provinces and export abroad. *LTG
