Montoyo against Abanco in Rnd 4
of Professional chess tournament

After beating separate opponents in Round 2 and Round 3, tournament leaders Ted Ian Montoyo and Ernie Abanco will face each other in Round 4 of the 12th Negrense Professional (Degree Holder) Individual Chess Tournament at Top’s Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City.

Montoyo, the 2009 champion, turned back Alan Alibuga in 25 moves of English in Round 2, then prevailed over lone female participant, Eden Agape Tumbos, in 21 moves of Sicilian in the next round to earn 3 points going into Round 4.

Registering an identical record also in Board 1 was Abancao, who effectively trapped Ronnie Villa in 52 moves of Nimzo-Indian in Round 2, then outplayed Club aster Nunilon Fullo III in 21 moves of Torre Attack in Round 3 to advance in the next round.

Falling short of his target of three straight points in the tournament, National Master Alan Severino managed to get past Herbert Ciocon Jr. in 35 moves of English in Round 2, but settled for a draw against James Carmelo in 52 moves of Larsen in Round 3.

His Round 4 opponent will be Joseph Navarra, who also collected 2.5 points going into Round 4.

Other pairings in the January 21 schedule of the tournament are: Marvin Ting against Dexter Belaño, Sr. on Board 3; and Danny Maersk Mangao against Aguedo Docase on Board 5.

The tournament is a 7-Round Swiss System (1-hour 20 moves + 1-hour play-to-the-finish) and an annual project organized and officiated by the Game Royale Aficionados of Negros, Inc. (GRANI) headed by Dr. Alfonso Teorima in cooperation with Top’s Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes, Inc.*NAB
