Negros Oriental Vice Governor Apolinario Arnaiz Jr. yesterday turned over 24 bicycles to Dumaguete City officials to promote its use.
Arnaiz allocated P500,000 for the surplus mountain bikes for barangay personnel also to save on gasoline.
The use of a bicycle is a better option amid rising fuel costs, Arnaiz said.
Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria, City Administrator William Ablong and city hall employees witnessed the turnover of the first batch of bicycles to 30 barangays and those who have not received one will get then later, Arnaiz added.
Arnaiz also announced to the barangay captains, especially those located near rivers, that he had also allocated a budget to buy giant bamboo seedlings to plant along the banks of the Banica River.
Arnaiz said that bamboo can cover bald mountains quicker than other tree species, protect the banks, and provide long-term measures to mitigate climate change.*JFP
