Capitol to lift
quarry suspension

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Governor Roel Degamo is set to lift the suspension order on quarry operations in some rivers in Negros Oriental that were not affected by flooding from tropical storm Sendong.

Degamo had issued a temporary suspension of all quarry operations in the province after the heavy flooding in Okoy, Banica and Tanjay rivers.

The assessment and recommendation report from the Environment and Natural Resources Division is the basis for lifting the suspension. Degamo said the lifting of the suspension is only for quarry operations.

All permittees with quarry operations in some parts of the province not affected by the flood will resume as soon as the lifting order is signed by Degamo.

The ENRD has submitted the technical assessment report to the areas that were greatly damaged by flood and its recommendations are for immediate rechanneling and dredging of river beds to prevent overflow during heavy flooding.

Some critical areas are considered priority areas for dredging and rechanneling.

Degamo said the province look for funds to build river control dikes in critical areas that could endanger lives and properties.

All mayors of areas affected by the flood have requested Degamo to fast- track the rechanneling, dredging and deepening of river banks to prevent further damage in case of another flood.

Degamo said the provincial government is now making all efforts to address their requests.*MA
