Reg’l sports heads meet today
to finalize 2012 WVRAA details

Sports heads from the six provinces of Western Visayas will meet today at the Governor’s Hall of the Provincial Capitol to finalize the details of the 2012 Western Visayas Regioal Athletic Association meet to be hosted by Negros Occidental in March.

The group will discuss the events to be included or excluded in this year’s regional meet, as well as the billeting areas and venues of the competition to ensure the smooth staging of the five-day sporting event.

Last year, the sports heads decided not to include sepak takraw, taekwondo, tennis and gymnastics in the annual WVRAA, claiming it was non-competitive.

This year, the body initially announced that 15 sports disciplines will be played in the elementary level and 16 in the secondary division with the contingents from the six provinces vying for the gold, silver and bronze.

All gold medalists will be representing Western Visayas in the national Palaro to be held in Lingayen, Pangasinan in April.

More than 3,000 delegates from the participating provinces are expected to converge in Bacolod City during the WVRAA, with the host province of Negros Occidental having the most number of delegates.

The Negrenses captured the most number of championship in last year’s meet in Iloilo to secure the overall crown. Iloilo placed second while Aklan came in third, followed by Capiz, Antique and Guimaras.

In secondary competition, Negros Occidental won the championship in boys’ and girls' badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, girls' chess, softball, boys' and girls' swimming, girls' table tennis, girls' tennis, and girls' volleyball.

Negros Occidental athletes also dominated the competition in elementary girls' athletics, boys' and girls' badminton, baseball, boxing, softball, boys' and girls' swimming, girls' taekwondo, girls' table tennis, boys' and girls' tennis and girls' volleyball.*NAB
