Garbage privatization scored
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Negros yesterday expressed its opposition to the proposed privatization of garbage collection by the Bacolod City government saying it will be an added burden to the people of the City.

During an audience with the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod,

Bayan secretary general Christian Tuayon said they believe the people of Bacolod still deserve a free, sanitary, environment-friendly and efficient public waste management.

Bayan together with the Kalipunan ng mga Damayang Mahihirap or Kadamay-Negros, wrote Bacolod Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus on January 12, asking that they be allowed to present their position during the SP session and that they needed some clarification on the privatization of garbage collection issue.

Tuayon said privatization of garbage collection means government’s abandonment of its duty to render public and free service of this kind.

“It is everybody’s knowledge that a private investment seeks profit thus, we expect that it is not only waste that will be collected later but also service fees,” he said.

Tuayon claimed that the proposed privatization of garbage collection will be an added financial burden to the people of Bacolod. In a state of economic crisis, it is unacceptable, he said.

Sayson said they will refer to the position paper of Bayan-Negros when the garbage privatization issue is tackled by the SP.*CGS
