City contingent ranks 9th
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Dumaguete City ranked number nine in the Free Interpretation category of the recent Sinulog competition in Cebu, besting contingents from the Visayas and Mindanao.

City tourism officer Woodrow Maquiling Jr., said despite a meager budget, the Dumaguete team put up a very good presentation in honor of the Sto. Nino.

Most of the dancers from Dumaguete are students and out-of-school youths, and some are flood victims while the grand sinulog winners are dance troup members in their localities with millions of pesos in funding.

They participated in the Sinulog to venerate the Sto. Nino, dancing their hearts out for saving their lives, their families' lives, Maquiling said.

The contingent also considered it as a thanksgiving performance for the influx of help for Sendong victims in the province and the city from the Cebu community. Recently, Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia and some mayors personally extended financial assistance to Sendong victims.

The Pakol festival of Sta. Catalina in Negros Oriental was Number 4 in the Sinulog-based category.

The city contingent is composed of 360 members.*JG
