Convene OFW council
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resolution urging Mayor Evelio Leonardia to convene the Bacolod City OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) Coordinating Council, was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

Authored by Councilor Sonya Verdeflor, the resolution said it is imperative for the mayor as chairperson to convene the Bacolod City OFW Coordinating Council and the composition of its members to prepare for and counter the inevitable negative impacts of Saudization and other involuntary repatriation of OFW’s and their families.

The ordinance creating the Bacolod City OFW Coordinating Council passed by the SP on Sept. 7, 2011, was signed by the mayor on Sept. 21, 2011.

Its objective is to create a one-stop OFW Center that will coordinate the initiatives of stakeholders in addressing the psycho-social, moral and economic concerns of Bacoleño OFW’s and their families to ensure the positive impacts of their migration.

The SP also passed another resolution requesting the Public Information Office, through the mayor, to immediately implement the information, education and dissemination campaign as embodied in City Ordinance 562, Series of 2011, authored by Councilor Em Ang.

C.O. 562, is an ordinance regulating the use, sale and provision of plastic bags as packaging materials in Bacolod City.

The resolution said there is a need for an information, education and communication campaign in order for business establishments and the public to be properly informed, and for them to adequately prepare, adjust and conform to the provisions of the ordinance.*CGS
