Govt welcomes
PAL sale scheme

MANILA -  The  government  has welcomed plans by tycoon Lucio Tan to sell loss-making flag carrier Philippine Airlines, with a presidential spokesman saying yesterday it will improve its image.

The comments came after Tan was reported by ABS-CBN news.com  during  the weekend as saying he wanted to offload PAL, Asia's oldest airline, "at the right price.

It said he was in talks with San Miguel Corp. chief Ramon Ang and Manuel Pangilinan of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co about a possible buyout, although it added that he had not decided how much he wanted.

‘CARP must no
longer be extended’

AnakPawis Rep. Rafael Mariano said yesterday at a press conference at the office National Federation of Sugar Workers in Bacolod City that there must be no more extensions for the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform program after June 30, 2014.

Mariano who is also the national chair of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas said the 25 years of CAPR program has not fully served its purpose in distribution of land.

He said what is needed now is the “Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill” or House Bill 374 because it will guarantee fair and just land distribution covering all haciendas in the country including those leased to big corporations.

Aquino admin keen on
rationalizing sin taxes

MANILA - Malacañang yesterday expressed the Aquino administration’s commitment and unyielding efforts to rationalize the collection of sin taxes in the country to get more revenues for the government  to be used for various developmental programs.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the amendment to the structure of sin taxes collection is long overdue.

Lacierda said the situation is that: “We are rationalizing the various levels of sin taxes. At present, there are a number of levels - four levels are that we would like to rationalize... this amendment is long overdue.”
