‘CARP must no
longer be extended’

AnakPawis Rep. Rafael Mariano said yesterday at a press conference at the office National Federation of Sugar Workers in Bacolod City that there must be no more extensions for the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform program after June 30, 2014.

Mariano who is also the national chair of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas said the 25 years of CAPR program has not fully served its purpose in distribution of land.

He said what is needed now is the “Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill” or House Bill 374 because it will guarantee fair and just land distribution covering all haciendas in the country including those leased to big corporations.

He said the Department of Agrarian Reform targeted 1.2 million hectares of land to distribute under CARPer but its annual accomplishment is between 50,000 to 60,000 hectares only.

He said, he will ask the committee on agrarian reform to lobby for the bill.

The bill proposes free land distribution and condonation of arrears or unpaid amortizations of lands tilled and owned by CARP at CARPer beneficiaries and also arrears of unpaid real property taxes.*LTG
