fuel growth of agriculture

MANILA – The country's agriculture grew 2.34 percent in 2011, fueled by a 4.15 percent expansion in the crops, livestock and poultry sub-sectors despite the onslaught of several disasters that year, the Department of Agriculture reported yesterday.

The DA also reported that 2011 saw the value of production in Philippine agriculture hit P1.4 trillion and P768.26 billion at current and constant prices, respectively.

Weighted average farmgate prices in agriculture likewise rose nearly nine percent last year, the DA added.

According to the DA, production in the crops sub-sector increased 4.82 percent in 2011 and accounted for nearly half of total agricultural output.

Production volume among crops in 2011 was highest for sugarcane (28.37 million metric tons or MTs), followed by palay (16.68 million MTs) and coconut (15.21 million MTs).

Corresponding value of production for such crops that year reached P56.19 billion, P254.27 billion and P120.90 billion at current prices and P22.42 billion, P139.81 billion and P31.02 billion at constant prices.

The crops sub-sector's weighted average farmgate prices rose almost 14 percent.

The DA also said the livestock sub-sector grew nearly two percent in 2011, accounting for almost 16 percent of total agricultural output that year.

The top volume of production in such sub-sector was for hog (1.94 million MTs) which also registered a value of production reaching P173.08 billion at current prices and P101.07 billion at constant prices.

The 2011 weighted average farmgate price in the sub-sector dropped 0.83 percent, however.

A 4.34 percent growth was realized in the poultry sub-sector which accounted for 13.71 percent of total agricultural output in 2011, DA said.*PNA
