Four collectors doubling as ushers of the illegal numbers game, “swertres”, were arrested recently at a police checkpoint in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.
First to be arrested at the police checkpoint at the national highway in Canlaon City was Edwin Gonzales Baltazar, 47, married of Barangay Mabigo of that city.
Baltazar, who was riding a motorcycle, was flagged down at the checkpoint where a plastic bag containing papers with number combinations and about P4,000 in “bet money” were confiscated from him.
Two other collectors were later also arrested at the same checkpoint after they were found to be carrying papers with “swertres” number combinations. The two, who were on separate motorcycles, were identified as Douglas Aluba, 50, of Biak Na Bato in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, and Winnie Babor, 48, married, of Masulog, Canlaon City.
The fourth suspected collector, Geronio Estrada, 28, of Bucalan, Canlaon City, was arrested at the checkpoint for allegedly having in his possession tally sheets, a calculator and money believed to be proceeds from the illegal numbers game.
The suspects are now detained and police are preparing charges against them for violation of Republic Act 9287 or An Act Increasing the Penalties of Illegal Numbers Games.*JFP
