A pregnant woman and her son were killed, while 24 were injured when the passenger mini bus they were riding on fell from a bridge in Brgy. Caradio-an, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, 12 p.m. yesterday.
Investigations by the Himamaylan police showed that the mini-bus driven by Benjie Himalaya, slammed into the barrier of the bridge, before plunging into the river, killing Rochelle Lagahit, 27, and her son, Cyrill John,7.
Police Officer 1 Rene Munez, traffic investigator of the Himamaylan police, said Lagahit who was five months pregnant, and her son, died on the spot, while the 24 other passengers, including Himalaya and the fare collector, were rescued from the fallen bus, and rushed to the Valeriano Gatuslao Memorial Hospital in Himamaylan and the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.
The bodies of the fatalities, who are residents of Brgy. Tagda, Hinigaran, were identified and claimed yesterday by their family members and relatives, Munez said.
Investigations also showed that Himalaya who was driving the vehicle, that came from Kabankalan and was bound for Bacolod, may have fallen asleep and this led to the accident.
The mother and son were seated behind the driver, and may have been hit by hard objects, that caused their deaths, Munez said. *GPB
