ABAP to discover
potential boxers

The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines hopes to discover potential boxers from the Visayas to join the national pool competitions.

Executive director Ed Picson, of ABAP, said, that he believes Visayan provinces have fresh talents in boxing that need to be developed so ABAP is going to the provinces, not only in the Visayas, but all over the country.

Picson attended the Visayas boxing championship for ages 15 to 18 years old, hosted by Dumaguete City participated in by nine boxing teams from the cities of Mandaue, Cebu, Tagbilaran in Bohol, Bago ang Bacolod in Negros Occidental, Northern Samar,  Leyte province, Tanawan, Leyte and two teams from Dumaguete City.

He said the country has no gold medal yet for boxing in the Olympics.

 ABAP chair Manny Pangilinan has promised to give P12 million to the first boxer to win a gold medal for the Philippines as an incentive, Picson said in an interview with the DAILY STAR in Dumaguete.

He said Rey Saludar received P3 million for a medal in the Asian Games, and P300,000 for every medal.

Picson also said, no boxer can so  far match the skills of Manny Pacquiao. Picson but he would be so happy if one with even half the skills of Paquiao could be discovered.*JG
