Another lot for a housing project for families affected by tropical storm “Sendong” will be provided by the Dumaguete City government.
Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria made the assurance during the formal turnover of the first 12 housing units at the Caritas Village Shelter Project in Barangay Bajumpandan. The project is spearheaded by the Diocese of Dumaguete and its Social Action Center team, in cooperation with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action and Caritas.
The city government donated the 5,000 square-meter lot in Bajumpandan to house 58 of the total 150 units to be funded by the CBCP-NASSA.
Sagarbarria lauded the Diocese of Dumaguete for being the first in the city and the province of Negros Oriental to formally turnover the housing units to the beneficiaries.
He said this should be a challenge to other government and non-government agencies to hasten their respective projects in providing decent homes for the displaced families, not only of “Sendong” but even of previous typhoons.
The national government, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, is constructing 60 units near the Caritas Village for families whose homes were destroyed by “Ondoy”, that came before “Sendong”.
Sagarbarria said the city government is hoping to acquire another lot for the remaining 92 shelters to be given by the Catholic Church, by next year.
Fr. Burton Villarmente, director of the Diocese Social Action Center, has emphasized the need for another project site soon, considering that the CBCP-NASSA already allocated funds for the houses.*JFP
