‘Drug peddler’ nabbed in
buy-bust in Bacolod

An alleged drug peddler was apprehended by members of the Bacolod City Police Anti-illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group in a buy-bust operation at about 3:25 p.m. Friday in Brgy. Alijis, this city.

CAIDSTOG chief, Senior Insp. Niel Exaltado, identified the suspect as Angelo Robert Francis Reyes, “alias JR”, 24, of Regent Pearl Homes Subdivision in Brgy. Alijis.

Exaltado said Reyes had been under surveillance on information that he is into illegal drugs trade. He added the suspect’s name surfaced since the time of former CAIDSTOG head, Senior Insp. Joemarie Occeño.

Reyes was nabbed after he handed three rolled paper containing suspected dried marijuana leaves to a police poseur buyer in exchange for P100, the police said.

Five more rolled paper of suspected dried marijuana leaves and fruiting tops, a big plastic sachet of suspected marijuana stalks and a cellular phone were recovered from Reyes after his arrest, Exaltado added.

Investigation showed that the suspect is supplying marijuana to students in a school near his house. The police are working on the identity of his supplier.

Reyes is detained at the lockup cell of the BCPO headquarters and charges for illegal drug sale and possession will be filed against him, Exaltado said.

He is the first suspected drug peddler arrested by CAIDSTOG under the leadership of Exaltado, who assumed his position last Tuesday, after Supt. Santiago Rapiz was suspended for three months by the Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas for simple neglect of duty.*APN

Private car hit in strafing
of Army truck by rebels

A private vehicle, loaded with civilians, was hit with bullets after suspected New People’s Army rebels strafed a military vehicle passing by the national highway in Sitio Capaclan, Brgy. Linaon, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, Friday, military records show.

A day before, suspected NPAs also indiscriminately fired their guns and harassed an isolated military outpost in Sipalay City, Lt. Col. Rodrigo Sosmena, 47th Infantry Battalion commander, said yesterday.

Nobody was hurt among the soldiers on board the military truck or the passengers of the Ford pick-up vehicle that was running on the opposite side.

Sosmena said that 47th IB soldiers were returning to their headquarters in Brgy. Tiling, Cauayan, from a medical mission they conducted when the incident occurred.

He said he believes that the two incidents were aimed at inflicting casualties among government troopers, as the rebels are no longer capable of staging tactical offensives.

The rebels took advantage of the market day in neighboring Brgy. Inayawan, Cauayan, to hit unwary soldiers, Sosmena added.

Two members of the 47th IB Peace and Development Team have been killed in separate ambush and liquidation staged by the NPA in Cauayan and Sipalay City, the past months, military records also show.

PDT personnel are being mobilized by the Philippine Army to help local government units identify solutions to the problems of farmers in conflict-affected communities of Negros Occidental.

Sosmena also raised the possibility that the rebels may have been trying to attract attention in southern Negros to ease military pressure off their comrades in other areas of the island.*GPB
