De Lima as chief justice
‘bad taste’, lawyers say

BY CARLA GOMEZ

The possible appointment of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima as the 24th chief justice of the Supreme Court has not gained support, even from President Benigno Aquino’s allies in Negros.

Two Bacolod lawyers, who supported Aquino for president and joined the call for the ouster of Renato Corana as chief justice, yesterday said De Lima should not have accepted the nomination to the post.

“She is definitely gutsy and decisive and may be a better choice than all other candidates, but appointing her as CJ seems to be replacing the Arroyo lackey with one of Aquino’s. Too bad for her but yes, such appointment is in bad taste,” lawyer Andrea Si said.

Top level UNA meet
expected in August

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. said yesterday that a top level meeting of the United Negros Alliance leaders, presided by former Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco, to pick the party’s candidates for 2013 is expected next month.

If the UNA procedure adopted in the last six years is followed, the meeting will be attended by the governor and the congressmen of Negros Occidental, he said.

Under the past process, Cojuangco, founder of UNA and Nationalist People’s Coalition, asked those present what position they wanted to run for and then a decision was reached, Alvarez said.moremoremore

No cultists in
Valladolid - Yogore

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Valladolid Mayor Rommel Yogore said yesterday there is no cultist group in his town.

The possible involvement of a cultist group in the desecration of a cadaver in Valladolid is among the angles being explored by the police.

The headless corpse of Alberto Pelicano, 58, whose left arm and leg were also cut off, was found in a creek Sunday, several meters away from the Valladolid public cemetery where he was buried on June 30.moremoremore
