Bacolod City has received a P35 million grant for passing the Department of Interior and Local Government’s Seal of Good Housekeeping, and the money will be used to repair public markets and roads, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said Wednesday.

The P1.5 million rehabilitation of the Central Market is part of the grant, he said.

A big part of the funds will be allocated for the repair of Magsaysay Avenue, Lacson Extension, Aguinaldo Street, and other road networks connected to a national road as required by the DILG, while about P8 million will be allocated for the repair of the different markets, he said.

Leonardia said the bulk of the P8 million will go to Libertad Market because it has bigger needs, as the Central Market has a new roof. The Burgos Market will also be given attention, he said.

Because what was required by the DILG are networks connecting to national roads, the streets from Shopping Center that connect to Burgos Street, and the Doña Juliana and City Heights roads connecting to Libertad Extension, are also qualified, Leonardia said.

He pointed out that Magsaysay Avenue and Rosario Street are also connected to Araneta Street, which is a national road.

Meanwhile, a resolution requesting the Office of Bacolod Rep. Anthony Golez and the Department of Public Works and Highways to complete the road at Araneta highway in Brgy. Tangub, was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

Authored by Councilor Roberto Rojas, the resolution said accidents have occurred due to the unfinished portion of the road, fronting Bangga Kabayo, Tangub, which is a national road, and its completion is long overdue.

It said immediate completion is needed to avoid further mishaps.

The SP also approved a resolution requesting Golez and the DPWH to hold in abeyance the asphalt overlaying project along Lacson Street.

The resolution said the asphalt overlaying project poses a question of necessity since the road is still in good condition.

No damage has been seen along Lacson Street before the asphalt overlaying project commenced, it said.

The resolution said there are other national roads in Bacolod City that are in bad state and need repair.

Consultation meetings between the city and the DPWH will be beneficial to identify areas that need more attention, it added.

The resolution was also authored by Rojas, who chairs the SP Committee on Public Works.*CGS
