Yap: I’ll wait for
Jules’ instructions

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Escalante City Mayor Melecio Yap yesterday said it is not for him to decide whom he will support for governor of Negros Occidental in the 2013 elections, like a good soldier, he will wait for instructions from Rep. Julio Ledesma IV (Neg. Occ., 1st District).

Yap was reacting to the statement made by Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. Friday that he still believes he has the support of most of the mayors, except for the mayor of Escalante.

That is a presumption by the governor, while he has some ill feelings, he is mature enough to set them aside to abide by the decision of the United Negros Alliance,  of which he is a member, Yap said.

The mayors are not the ones who decide whom the party will support for governor, Yap said, adding he has not received any instructions yet from Ledesma on whom to support.

Ledesma has openly told the mayors of the first district that he will support Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez for governor in 2013 if asked to choose, because Marañon said he would only serve one term as governor, Yap said.

But Ledesma also said they will have to wait for the UNA decision on whom to field for governor, Yap said.

Alvarez earlier said that if the previous UNA procedure for selection of candidates is followed, the governor and congressmen will meet with UNA founder Eduardo Cojuangco on the matter.

Cojuangco will then asks each one what posts they want to run for and a decision is reached, after which the congressmen return to their districts to inform the mayors whom the party has decided to support, Alvarez added.

Alvarez, like Yap, said he would abide by the party’s decision on whom to field.*CPG
