Surprises

Benjamin Calderon

This week was full of surprises. Sure it is encouraging when the surprises come and they contribute to “pieces falling into place” category. In their simple way, these surprises remind us to be grateful for their occurrence. The office’s internet connection became a reality and communication with regulatory offices, clients, as well as, family and friends, who became just a click away. After making the rounds of the dominant national internet service providers who denied our application either due to no coverage or the other extreme that is their capacity was fully subscribe, a local entrepreneur has been able to connect us to a larger and wider part of civilization with the benefit of convenience from the work place. Now we need not have to make the trip to the local internet café.

The garden has sprung surprise after surprise with the planted lettuce now ready being served at the table. After three attempts, now we water the plants morning and afternoon to keep the soil moisture favorable to their growth. The first two attempts lacked water, a basic need of plant growth and survival. Then the “dama de noche” has blossomed together with the “ylang-ylang” tree and the whole home is naturally perfumed so to speak. What a blessing.

Then a text message was received requesting that I personally received the five Boer goats that the Department of Agriculture was loaning to the farm as part of the up grading program for local ruminants. It is a start with the hope of having more upgraded goats after having replaced those loaned at a ratio of 3:1 within a three year period. The replacing of these breeders with local born children is an interesting challenge itself. However, having improved goats with an average body weight of 50 kilos is one contribution to national development that I cherish.

However, we do take a time of silence to say thank you for the life and service of Dolphy. The whole nation has our heads bowed in respect to the humor and joy the man brought into our lives and to the nation. To him we part with the following anecdote to encourage us to be grateful for surprises. A very attractive lady goes up to a bar in a quiet rural pub. She gestures alluringly to the bartender who comes over immediately.

When he arrives, she seductively signals that he should bring his face closer to hers. When he does she begins to gently caress his full beard. "Are you the manager?" she asks, softly stroking his face with both hands. "Actually, no," the man replied." "Can you get him for me? I need to speak to him" she says, running her hands beyond his beard and into his hair. "I'm afraid I can't," breathes the bartender. "Is there anything I can do?" "Yes, there is. I need you to give him a message," she continues, running her forefinger across the bartender's lips and slyly popping a couple of her fingers into his mouth and allowing him to suck them gently. "What should I tell him?" the bartender manages to say. "Tell him," she whispers, "there is no toilet paper, hand soap, or paper towels in the ladies room."*
