NORECO 2 assures delivery
of concrete poles from China
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Negros Oriental Electric 2 Cooperative assured yesterday that the China supplier contracted to deliver millions of pesos worth of concrete poles will make true its promise by the third quarter of 2012.

Acting NORECO 2 general manager Dionefred Macahig gave the assurance, adding that SUMAI, the company based in mainland China that landed the contract to supply 5,000 concrete poles to the power coop, is expected deliver the remaining 4,774 poles by first week of August this year, or more than 12 months since the first batch of 226 poles were transported on July 9, 2011.

The transaction and contract with SUMAI, through a commodity loan, was sealed in the previous NORECO 2 administration of Engr. Ephraim Taclob, Macahig said.

The delay in the delivery of the concrete poles stirred public interest after it was noted that while a large chunk of the contract amount was already paid, only an insignificant number of the items were delivered.

The delay was caused by the expiration of NORECO 2’s certificate of good standing last May. He said it was only on June 25, 2012 that the electric cooperative received the renewed document, which is required by the Bureau of Customs in the delivery procedure.

Macahig said SUMAI has assured that its sub-contractor, Yander Industry Group also based in China, will deliver 4,428 poles by next month, directly to the port of Dumaguete for offloading. The last batch of 346 concrete poles will follow, perhaps on another ship, he added.

Macahig said he was relieved that all documents and requirements have been processed so that the next shipment will directly be made to Dumaguete instead of via the Cebu port.

He said that last year’s delivery were coursed through the Cebu International Port, so NORECO 2 had to pay an additional P500,000 hauling fee to transport the poles to Dumaguete.

The poles will be erected mostly in the capital city of Negros Oriental, Macahig added.*JFP
