Nutrition Month

The Silay City government has lined up a series of activities in line with the 38th Nutrition Month celebration, on the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain!” to promote healthy living and to increase the consumption of vegetables of each household.

The celebration is under Presidential Decree 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines, that designates July as Nutrition Month, a press release from the city said.

Yesterday, the City Health in coordination with the Agriculture Office distributed seedlings for the simultaneous planting activity in every school and barangays in the city, spearheaded by Sangguniang Panlungsod members Rosalinda Caja, Uldarico Penuela and Joedith Gallego, the press release also said.

On July 26, a food package distribution will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the Sen. Jose C. Locsin Cultural and Civic Center, with the severely-underweight pre-school children as beneficiaries. The following day, an inter-barangay cooking contest will also be held, City Health Nutritionist and Garantisadong Pambata coordinator Evelyn Tionko said.

The celebration started with a motorcade that was participated in by all 16 barangays, government offices, City Nutrition Committee, barangay health workers, nutrition scholars and the Department of Education-Silay on July 2.

Meanwhile, Tionko said the CHO also distributed vitamin A and other micronutrient supplementation to children. “Midwives and CHO employees visit every barangay and give doses of vitamin A and other micronutrients every six-month interval”, she added in the press release.*
