NegOr to award
GPAK 2012 winners

The Negros Oriental provincial government will award this year’s winners of the Gulayan sa Palaisdaan Alay sa Kabataan provincial evaluation on July 17 at Plaza Ma. Luisa Suites Inn, Dumaguete City, a government press release said.

The awarding rite will mark the 10th year that GPAK, a Galing Pook awardee, was implemented in Negros Oriental to improve food production in the province by allotting unused lots within school grounds for vegetable production and tilapia ponds.

Winners under the Gulayan category for the first district are the Tinaogan Elementary School in Bindoy, first; Gaboc Elementary School in Canlaon City, second; DVLM Elementary School in Vallehermoso, third; Lower Lumapao ES in Canlaon, fourth; and San Jose ES in La Libertad, fifth; with a special citation for San Jose ES in Manjuyod, the press release said.

Second district winners are Sta. Agueda Elementary School in Pamplona, first; Junob National High School in Dumaguete, second; Malalangsi ES in Pamplona, third; Dumaguete City HS, fourth; and Jose Rotea Memorial ES in Tanjay City, fifth; with Canggohob ES in Mabinay to receive a special citation.

Third district winners are AMRES in Sta. Catalina, first; Bayawan NHS, second; Banga ES in Bayawan City, third; Omod ES in Bayawan, fourth; and Lico-lico ES in Siaton, fifth. Mabuhay ES in Sta. Catalina will get a special commendation.

For the Palaisdaan category, the winners are Gomentoc ES in Ayungon, Cantumbol ES in Mabinay, Lower Lumapao ES in Canlaon City, Pal-ew ES in Tanjay City, and Jose Rotea ES, also in Tanjay, as first to fifth place winners, respectively, the press release also said.

Cash prizes that will be given to the top three winners in the two categories total P775,000, Nittz Bangay of the Provincial Agriculturist Office, said.

GPAK was initiated in the province in 2002 by then governor and now Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District).

It earned a Galing Pook award due to its positive impact on the nutritional status of school children in the province by helping reduce the malnutrition rate. It also prompted parents to start their own backyard gardening and tilapia ponds in their homes, the press release added.*
