Environmental essay-writing and on-the-spot artwork contests on the theme “Simplicity In Nature: How I See It In The Future”, were initiated by the Ecological Society of the Philippines and JRS Express at Silliman University recently, ESP volunteer project organizer Malu Gacuma said.
Winners in the environmental artwork contest were Tevet Margaret Vanguardia, first place, who received P5,000 in cash; Vince Andrean Bandiala, second, who won P3,000; and Sha’Anne Lawas, third, who received P1,500.
Winners in the essay-writing contest were Diane Petersen, Mel Ann Clair Bagaipo, and Mariella Bustamante, who received P5,000, P3,000 and P1,500, respectively.
They were also given environmental trophies, designed by Bacolod-based architect Dominic Diocson, during the July 7 awarding rites.
Winners in both categories also received certificate of participation and T-shirt from ESP.
The event, that was in partnership with the United Architects of the Philippines-Mt. Kanlaon chapter and Silliman, was held to educate the youth, to make their voices heard and to allow them to take part in environmental conservation due to the deteriorating state of the environment and the planet’s degrading condition, Gacuma said.*
