A group of running enthusiasts yesterday launched the 111-kilometer Silliman Relay to drum up interest among the public for the event that will start on August 10, a press release from organizers said.
The total distance corresponds to the founding anniversary of Silliman, and covers Dumaguete City and the five towns of Amlan, Bacong, Dauin, Valencia and Zamboanguita.
Event manager Irma Faith Pal of the College of Mass Communication said the idea sprang from a group, composed mostly of Sillimanians, who wanted something special to help mark Silliman’s 111th Foundation Day.
Teams will run through the night until the morning. They will start on August 10 with a road run along the streets of Dumaguete up to Amlan and back, then an uphill run to Valencia. On their way down, they will conquer the rough road to Dauin via Bacong, then head off to Zamboanguita and back to the Silliman campus, the press release also said.
“What's more exciting about this is that we are starting the run at 6 p.m. on August 10 and we will run through the night until the crack of dawn, and we have until 9 a.m. of August 11 to be at the finish line at the Silliman Amphitheater,” Pal said.
There are two groups organizing the event: Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club and the Dumaguete Amateur Runners, she added.
The 111KM Silliman Relay is open to all who are physically fit and who have adequately-trained for at least a 10K, 15K or a half marathon of 21K. Deadline for registration is on July 18 at DermCorner.
Those interested may call or visit the Silliman Alumni Association Inc. Office for inquiries, the press release added.*
