Cops filing raps vs. woman
for transport of exotic birds

A woman nabbed Friday last week for selling exotic birds will be charged for violation of Section 27 of Republic Act 9147 or the illegal transport of wildlife today before The Bacolod City Prosecutor’s Office.

Chief Insp. Fernando Salvatierra, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Bacolod head, said the charges will be filed against Rosita Formenta, 57, separated, of Brgy. Compostela, Liloan, Cebu province with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office as complainant. He said the CENRO, in cooperation with the CIDG, is preparing the required documents.

Formentera, was arrested after she handed two-month old birds placed in separate plastic bags to a DENR operative, who acted as poseur buyer at the Bacolod City North terminal in Brgy, Bata at about 3 a.m. Friday, Joan Gerangaya, Community Environment and Natural Resources Office-Bacolod head.

The CIDG and CENRO members recovered four Kalaw Hornbills and 16 Tariktik Hornbills from Fromentera, Gerangaya said. Formentera will be meted imprisonment of one to six months for each bird recovered from her if indicted.

Salvatierra said that when they interrogated Formentera, she said they buy the birds at P500 each from a source in Samar whom she refused to name, and sell them at a much higher price.

A young Kalaw Hornbill can be bought for P1,000 and sold for P2,500, while a mature one costs about P10,000. A young Tariktik Hornbill can be bought for P500 and sold for P1,000, while a mature one would cost not less than P6,000, police investigation showed.

The Tariktik Hornbill is a highly-endangered species and can be found in the rainforests of Panay, Negros, Masbate and Guimaras, while the Kalaw Hornbill makes its home in the forests of 11 islands in the Philippines.*APN
