Acuña, Palanca, Suncuaco
grand reunion July 20-21

The Acuña, Palanca and Suncuaco families of Victorias City, Negros Occidental, descendants of Don Alejandro Acuña Yap Quiña (Yap Kin Ya), will celebrate their first-ever grand reunion on July 20 and 21 in Bacolod City and Victorias, a press release from organizers said.

About 200 descendants will gather at the Bacolod Pavillon Resort on Friday for the dinner to be hosted by Simplicio Palanca, a grandchild of Yap Quiña, and a mass to be celebrated by another grandchild, Manila Bishop Broderick Pabillo, the press release also said.

On July 21, lunch will be served at the Toreno Fishpond of the late Victorias City Mayor Remedios Bantug, the don’s granddaughter. A festival setting will be witnessed at the Victorias Coliseum and City Resort, compliments of Mayor Severo Palanca, Drumbeaters, Kadalag-an, MassKara, fire and dragon dancers, fireworks display, bands, and special presentations from family members.

Children will be treated to fairs, food booths, party jumps, unlimited swimming, clowns and magician, courtesy of Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District), grandson of Bantug, the press release added.

Yap Quiña, a Chinese businessman, came to the Philippines with his son, Saturnino Acuña and nephew, Gonzalo Dy Ching (now Dithcing) in the 19th Century. He earned the name “Don Alejandro” and became a landed proprietor.

In 1905, the don donated a 20-hectare land, where the Victorias City Hall, public plaza, and parts of Central Victorias stand today, to the then municipal government, when the owner of the old Victorias, now called Daan Banwa in Barangay 9, had to get his land back, the press release said.

Don Alejandro married Salome Buncio, a daughter of a Spanish high ranking official, and had two daughters – Andrea, who married Lucio Chilianchin Palanca, and Claudina, who wed Luis Suncuaco Sr. His son Saturnino married Simeona Junsay, the press release also said.

For more inquiries, those interested may call Vice Mayor Frederick Palanca or Maricel Acuña at 034-3993686, 0920-9650704 or 0932-8920187, the press release added.*
