P4.5M tissue culture lab to
open in La Carlota: guv

The Negros Occidental provincial government is building a P4.5 million tissue culture lab in La Granja, La Carlota City, Gov. Alfredo Marañon yesterday said.

The provincial government is providing the building and the University of the Philippines in Los Baños the technical expertise, he said.

It will provide tissue culture for corn, various vegetable and fruit plants to ensure the propagation of good varieties and ensure that they are disease free, the governor said.

PHILSURIN also has a tissue culture lab already operating in La Granja for sugarcane research, he said.

Meanwhile, Marañon said that the Social Security Service should not increase premiums being paid by its members now, it should improve its services first.

Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño on Tuesday said the Social Security System is planning to increase premiums by 10.4 percent to 11 percent by the end of the year.

Now is not the time to increase premiums, it should be done when incomes have correspondingly increased, the governor said.

Any increase should be done gradually to cushion its impact on SSS members, he added.*CPG
