Red Cross seeks blood donors
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The Philippine National Red Cross is asking for more blood donors to address the problem of inadequacy of blood supply in the country, Red Cross of National Blood Director Service Christine Monina Nalupta, said yesterday.

Nalupta, who was guest at the blessing of the Red Cross blood Center in Bacolod City, said the total blood requirement of the country is about 950,000 units annually, but what was collected last year was only about 700,000, while blood units collected every day is only 2,500.

“We need blood donors to donate at least every three months so we can help all patients who are in need of blood transfusions”, she also said.

The units collected in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental had increased to 11,000 this year compared to the 5,000 blood units collected last year, records from PRC Bacolod chapter show.

The increase in blood unit collection of the Red Cross Bacolod chapter was attributed to its partnership with the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and other private organizations, Nalupta said.

Nalupta said they have upgraded their facilities and increased their manpower to meet their objective for safe and adequate blood supply.

Patients undergoing surgery, those with chronic kidney diseases, or have cancer, leukemia and dengue, are the common recipients of blood units from PRC, she added.

Red Cross is also continuously recruiting volunteers for the Bacolod and Negros Occidental chapter to help them, especially during calamities. PRC is also set to establish a blood service facility in Kabankalan that aims to provide blood supply to the people of Negros Occidental and Oriental.*APN
