Comelec team
back from Sulu

BY CARLA GOMEZ

The 186 personnel of the Commission on Elections from Western Visayas, 53 of whom are from Negros Occidental, are back from registering voters in Sulu.

They returned on Sunday and are now preparing for the resumption of the registration of voters in Western Visayas on August 1, COMELEC Negros Occidental Provincial Supervisor Jessie Suarez said yesterday.

The WV team, along with COMELEC personnel from other parts of the country, were sent to the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao for the registration of voters there, with the old list having been purged.

Suarez said the number of voters who registered in Sulu was less than that on the previous list, with the dead no longer on the new list.

The list of voters registered from July 9 to 18 in the ARMM will still be subject to further purging after Election Registration Boardhearings are conducted, he said.

An Automated Fingerprint Identification System was used in the ARMM registration to determine if residents registered more than once so they can be purged, he said.

The COMELEC may come out with a resolution that will require the automatic purging of anyone found to have registered more than once in the ARRM this July, he said.

Some politicians, hoping to eliminate the votes of the supporters of their opponents in the next election, have reportedly paid them to register a second time in other areas, Suarez said.

It appears that some of those who registered to vote in the ARMM had found ways to remove the indelible ink placed on their fingers so they could register again, he added.*CPG
