The filing of certificates for candidacy will still be in October, and the elections are slated in May 2013 yet, but already lines are being drawn, and positionings are going on, not only at the national level, but especially in local government units.
In Negros Occidental, for instance, residents of the component towns and cities are suddenly surprised that the political blocs that they had thought to be very closely-knit and unshakeable, seem to be showing some cracks that appear to be growing recently. This means that there may be some surprises when October comes around and the various political aggrupations have to complete their slate and present their tickets to their constituents.
The most intriguing development is apparently in the line-up of the provincial team. Will Negros Occidental see the same group that had seemed so solid and workable before, together again?
The latest in the rumor mills do not say so. It looks as if a new team, or two new teams, may come up consisting of people formerly from the same political party who have fallen apart, or who have chosen an agenda of their own.
Well, that is the way of politicians, and we should be grateful that our people enjoy complete freedom to do this, that is, have a change of mind and opt to strike out on their own, even if, so far, all of them insist that everything is all right, that they are all “friends” with each other.
We who are watching from the sidelines only have to look on and hope that they will all be inspired with the same purposes and love for their community and people, and their readiness to serve to the best of their ability.
What we should hope and pray against is that no potential dictators or tyrants among those who are planning to offer these “services”, or to control those on whom the people will repose their trust through the coming election.*
