Storm warning up
in Northern Luzon

MANILA  – Tropical storm “Gener”  slightly gained strength while hovering east of Cagayan yesterday afternoon, prompting the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration to maintain storm warning signals over seven areas in Northern Luzon.

Weather Observer Benjie Depas said that as of 4 p.m. yesterday  the storm was estimated at 380 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan (18.6 °N, 125.7 °E) with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph.

Depas said Gener is not likely to make landfall and may instead head for Taiwan. It is expected to leave the Philippine territory on Tuesday or Wednesday.

PAGASA said Gener may generate 10 to 25 millimeters per hour rainfall (heavy to intense) within its 700-kilometer diameter.

It added that the weather disturbance will enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, especially the western section.

As this developed, PAGASA said public storm signal No. 2 remains hoisted over the provinces of Cagayan, Calayan Group of Islands, Babuyan Group of Islands and Batanes Goup of Islands. These areas are expected to experience 61 to 100 kph winds within the next 24 hours.

On the other hand, signal No. 1 stays over Isabela, Kalinga and Apayao as winds of 30 to 60 kph are expected within the next 36 hours over these areas.*AFP
