Both sides see victory
in election tomorrow
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Both camps of the two candidates for congressman of the fifth district of Negros Occidental are predicting victory on Saturday.

At a grand rally in Himamaylan City yesterday afternoon Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Maranon Jr. said he sees a clear victory for BInalbagan Mayor Alejandro Mirasol.

On the other hand, Board Member Emilio Yulo III yesterday said he is confident he will win on Saturday.

Yulo said that unlike his opponent, he could not afford a grand rally but was campaigning on the road as usual.

The campaign period for Saturday’s special election ended at midnight yesterday.

Yulo, who is running under the Nacionalista Party, said he was very optimistic he will make history by winning on a shoestring budget campaign and a new brand of politics.

Marañon, at a grand rally for Mirasol at the Valeriano Gatuslao gym in Himamaylan City attended by about 5,000 supporters, said Mirasol’s victory is brighter than daylight.

He pointed out that Mirasol has the support of the Liberal Party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition, the United Negros Alliance and officials of five of the six local government units in the fifth district.

Simple arithmetic will show that Mirasol will win, he said.

Marañon said because Mirasol will have access to Malacañang being the official candidate of the LP, and the only one endorsed by President Benigno Aquino, this will be beneficial to the fifth district when he becomes congressman.

Aside from Marañon also present at the rally were La Castellana Mayor Alberto Nicor, Isabela Mayor Francis Malabor, Moises Padilla mayor Francisco Nazareno, former assemblyman Tony Gatulao, former APEC partylist Rep Rene Silos and other elected local officials from the six localities in the 5th district.

Mirasol said that as congressman, he will implement his RENEWAL program that stands for : R - roads and infrastructure, E - environment, N - nutrition and social services, E - education , W – water A- agriculture, and L – livelihood.

Yulo, on the other hand, has stressed that his priority will be delivery of education and health services to the people of the fifth district.

Education is the best way to overcome poverty, he said.*CPG
