Dormitories
violating fire code

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Several boarding houses and dormitories in Bacolod City were found to have violated the fire code during the inspection conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection yesterday.

City fire marshal, Chief Insp. Pamela Rojane Candido said some of the boarding houses and dormitories lack fire fighting apparatus while others have equipment that are no longer functioning.

Candido said other dormitories and boarding houses do not have easy access to the fire exits and have no sprinkler systems. She said they will issue notice of violations to the owners so they can correct their lapses or they will be fined not less than P50,000.

Candido added that they will re-inspect these dormitories and boarding houses again to check if they have complied with the code.

She said they did not find any corroded electrical wirings when they checked the boarding houses and dormitories, unlike in their previous inspections.

BFP is also reminding the owners and managers of these boarding houses and dormitories to constantly remind their tenants to unplug all electrical appliances like cellular phones and laptop computers, if they are not in use to avoid fire incidents.

Candido also said that the BFP has already inspected all the public schools in Bacolod City.

City deputy fire marshal, Insp. Publio Ploteña said that when they inspected the public schools they found violations like huge arches on the main gate that prevent the easy access of fire trucks and ambulances during emergencies, obstructed pathways leading to fire exits, and corroded electrical wirings.*APN
