Complaints aired
versus crab kill

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Residents of Brgy. Taloc in Bago City, Negros Occidental, aired complaints yesterday against the Distilleria de Bago Inc. for allegedly releasing waste into the sea causing a crab kill in their area.

In a statement it issued, DBI said they had done their internal checks and assured the public that the company continues to adhere to the strictest quality and safety standards, and has remained compliant with all government regulations.

Some residents told ABS-CBN Bacolod that the color of the water is dark because of the waste they claimed is being released by the DBI. The last time there was a fish kill in the area was about ten years ago, they added.

DBI said systems that have long been established to ensure the safety of the community around them and that of their employees continue to be in place.

DBI also said that they already took the initiative to work with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to help determine the root cause of the reported crab kill.

They also assured that they will coordinate with the barangay and all stakeholders to help the community address the matter.*APN
