A livelihood training center will be established in the Dumaguete City High School compound in Barangay Calindagan for sugar workers in Negros Oriental.
The facility will start construction as soon as the Department of Labor and Employment central office releases the P6 million fund from its Social Amelioration Project.
DOLE Region 7 director Ma. Gloria Tango, Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria, and Negros Oriental Vice Gov. Apolinario Arnaiz Jr. yesterday led the signing of the memorandum of agreement for the project.
Tango said that with the MOA signing, the facility that will benefit sugar workers and their families in Negros Oriental will be realized.
The center will offer a variety of skills training to provide support livelihood programs for sugar workers and their families; and will complement efforts of the government to eradicate child labor in the sugar industry.
The project hit a snag last year when Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo allegedly refused to provide a lot for the project.
In 2009, the Negros Oriental District Tripartite Councils of the Central Azucarera de Bais, the United Robina Sugar Milling Corporation, and the Herminio Teves Company Inc. requested the Sugar Tripartite Council to allocate P6.1 million for its construction.
Sagarbarria, meanwhile, said the center that will be located in a 400 sq. m. lot provided by the City government, is ideal to be put up in Dumaguete as a provincial capital and where various institutions and businesses are located.*JFP
