Ascalon’s exhibit to open
A one-man exhibition called Dekahon, an alter ego boxed collection by Dennis Francis Sianson Ascalon, will be open at the Gallery Orange, at Lopue’s Mandalagan annex, Bacolod City, from 2 – 9 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays starting tomorrow to July 7.
The exhibit is composed of short stories-in-a-box in four fresh works of 2x2 acrylic on canvas as well as six provocative large works of 4’x6’ and four works of 4’x3’ in mixed media etched on wood.
The little tales told in Ascalon’s frames are his figurative take on his community’s socio-political double life, a narration of the boxed stories of his island and country in a visual microcosm of such a society.
His four works on canvas, “Out-of-the-Closet”, “Azucarera-de-Mama”, ”Azucarera-de-Papa” and “Star-Box”, are comments on a person’s inner truth and dreams oftentimes contained in a box that when sprung in the manner of a jack-in-a-box, will tell of a distinctly different, sometimes opposing reality.
Ascalon constantly redefines himself through serious play with unconventional materials as well as cross training with other creative fields. Born in Iloilo City and educated at the University of the Philippines-Visayas, Ascalon is presently based in Negros.
He has had several national and international one-man shows and group exhibitions, and his works have become part of notable individual and museum collections here and abroad.*
