I battled political titans, Yulo says
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Negros Occidental Board Member Emilio Yulo III revealed his intention to resign as chairman of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Laws, after re-assuming his old position as a SP member yesterday.

“I believe that such chair should enjoy the utmost trust and confidence of both the executive and legislative branch of the provincial government,” Yulo said in his privilege speech during the SP regular session.

“Delicadeza” dictates that I ask that I be relieved of such so that it may be reposed upon one who enjoys the most utmost trust and confidence,” Yulo, who had lost to Binalbagan Mayor Alejandro Mirasol in the 5th district congressional race, stressed.

Governor Alfredo Maranon Jr. had earlier praised Mirasol and Yulo for displaying the highest level of professionalism in their political campaign.

Yulo, a nephew of Mirasol, admitted that the odds were heavily stacked against him, when he decided to run for the vacant 5th district congressional seat of Negros Occidental.

POLITICAL TITANS

“I was going to do battle, not against one particular candidate, but rather on a whole assembly of political titans, who came not just from our district, but from far and beyond,” he said.

Mirasol got the support of the Liberal Party, United Negros Alliance and five of the six mayors of the 5th district of Negros Occidental, among others.

Yulo, a member of the Nacionalista Party, said “While pundits had early on predicted that it was going to be a walk in the park and the crystal ball forecast a route, however, things appeared different on the ground”

Saying that it appeared to be a close fight after all, Yulo added “ I had taken on everything that they gave, and the only weapon I had was to brave the blistering sun and heavy rains to bring my campaign to the door step of each household”.

NO MASSACRE

“Seventeen days after, I had fallen short. Alamo had fallen, but it was not a massacre,” he said.

Admitting that David was not able to overcome Goliath, Yulo also said that “lollipops” failed to stem the tide and the people have spoken. “In a country where there are no losers, I readily conceded and congratulated the winner,” he stressed.

For him, Yulo said, it was definitely worth running for the vacant congressional seat. “I may have fallen short but I had given them a good fight”, he added.

Yulo garnered 68,879 votes, compared to 81,982 of Mirasol, with a difference of 13,103 votes.

“To the close to 70,000 voters who manifested their love and support for me, I could not repay you with material things, but only with the same love you have shown, and the service which you rightfully deserve,” Yulo, who admitted having joined politics to advocate for a new brand, said.

TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE

Yulo said he is still young and opportunities still abound, stressing that there are still plenty of elections ahead.

“History is replete with great politicians who had, in their long checkered political career suffered defeat. I don’t know what is going to be in store for me, but I think I am too young to retire from public service,” he said.

Despite his desire to resign from chairmanship of the SP committee on Laws, Yulo also chaired the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

On motion of Board Member Renato Gustilo, chairperson of the SP committee on Public Safety, the provincial council approved his proposed resolution, which commended the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office and the 303rd Infantry Brigade, headed by Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan and Col.Oscar Lactao, respectively, for making the 5th district election on June 2, peaceful and orderly.*GPB
