BY CARLA GOMEZ

It’s the people of the fifth district of Negros Occidental, notso-called political  titans, who chose their congressman,Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.

Board Member Emilio “Dino” Yulo III, defeated congressional bet, saidin privilege speech during the Sangguniang Panlalawiganregular session on Wednesday that he did battle “not against one particular candidate, but rather on a whole assembly of political titans, who came, not just from our district, but from far and beyond.”

Alejando “Bebot” Mirasol, the candidate of the Liberal Party and the United Negros Alliance headed by Marañon,  won with81,982 votes or a lead of 13,103 votes overYulo of the Nacionalista Party who garnered 68,879 votes in a special election Saturday.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God. In the fifth district the voice of God has spoken clearly,” Marañon said.

On Yulo’s political titan tag, Marañon said:“I am not a titan,I’m just an ant among the elephants.”

In his speech, Yulo alsoasked that he be relieved of his chairmanship of the SP Committee on Laws, after re-assuming his old position as a SP member on Wednesday.

“I believe that such chair should enjoy the utmost trust and confidence of both the executive and legislative branch of the provincial government,” Yulo also said.

Marañon said Yulo was givensuch task inthe SP because he isthe only lawyer on the provincial boardand the committee is tasked with determining if measures brought to the provincial board’s attention are within the law.

However, it is up to the SP to act on Yulo’sposition, it is his privilege to choose if he wishes to remain as chairman of the committee or not, the governor said.

Yulo, in his speech also thanked the close to 70,000 voters in the fifth district who manifested their love and support for him in the special election.*CPG
