Robbers kill 2 farm watchmen
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Three unidentified armed men shot dead two farm watchmen, and robbed at gunpoint an hacienda payroll clerk of P125,000 in cash Saturday in Brgy. Santa Teresa, Manapla, Negros Occidental.

Senior Inspector Edencio Gregorio, Manapla police chief, said yesterday that Eddie Basa, 62, husband of Hacienda Bariw paymaster Teresa Basa, succumbed to gunshot wounds in the chest and head.

Another victim identified as Julie Biating, who tried to rescue the couple, was also shot in the left leg. She died while being treated for her wound, at the Teresita Lopez Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, Gregorio said.

Investigations by the Manapla police showed that Teresa, who was escorted by her husband, was distributing the salaries of the workers of Esteban Lacson at Hacienda Bariw, Brgy. Santa Teresa, Manapla, when they were robbed by the three armed suspects.

Before the incident, witnesses said they noticed the presence of the three suspects in the place, but ignored them.

Gregorio said one of three suspects also shot Basa in the head, to ensure his death. He was declared dead on arrival at the Ika-ayong Lawas Foundation Hospital in Victorias City.

Manapla policemen, who responded to the incident, recovered three spent shells of a 9mm pistol, a bolo and a pair of slippers at the crime scene.

The three suspects used the Kymco motorcycle owned by the Basa couple, as their getaway vehicle.

Troopers of the 2nd Maneuver Platoon of the 6th Regional Public Safety Battalion headed by Inspector Joemel Gonzaga are joining the Manapla police in the manhunt operations against the fleeing suspects.

The latest robbery and shooting incident came a month after the police arrested three suspects linked to series of hold-up and murder incidents in Manapla.* GPB
